Making America Better, Together is a socially engaged performance conducted in the immediate aftermath of the 2016 presidential election. Over the span of five days, I set up a small booth at the playground on the edge of Gillham Park in Kansas City, MO and invited the local community to help me create a new American flag, one comprised o positive messages inspired by the park. Whether it was the best thing that happened in their day or their favorite thing about the park, the people of the park filled out over 250 6”x6” tiles of red, white, and blue papers with positive writings and drawings. These messages were then used to construct a monumental 120”x78” flag. This flag honors those in the park who gave their personal messages, while also celebrating the optimism which can unify the people of America, even in times of great division, hatred, and unrest.
